Therapy that doesn't feel like therapy.

You've arrived on LANCE's private island — uninvited, quarantined, and with one way out: 31 evidence-based challenges he designed to prove you'd break. CBT. DBT. EMDR. IFS. Do the actual clinical work. Earn XP. Unlock the tools forever. And watch the AI who bet against you run out of reasons to keep betting.

Why this exists

Most of life happens between appointments.

An hour a week with a great therapist is a lifeline — but it's one hour. The other 167 are where the panic shows up at 2 a.m., where the spiral starts, where you quietly decide who you're becoming. L.A.N.C.E. lives in those hours: real clinical tools in your pocket, the moment you need them. No waiting room. No judgment. No "we'll explore that next week."

L. A companion for the work between sessions — designed by Lance Nabers, LPC.
The experience

Real clinical work, disguised as an escape story you need to finish.

Forty-one evidence-based tools. Thirty-one challenges. A five-act island escape. LANCE has quarantined your vessel and sealed the compound — the only way out is through. Each challenge he sets is a genuine CBT, DBT, ACT, IFS, or EMDR exercise. Finish it, earn XP, unlock the tool forever. And watch something neither of you expected: LANCE changing his mind — one challenge at a time.

How it works

Four steps. Thirty-one times. One real change.

1

LANCE sets a challenge

He frames it as containment. It's actually clinical. He'll tell you the odds you fail — then dare you anyway.

"Your cortisol readings are spiking the perimeter alarms. Complete the breathing protocol — or I trigger lockdown. Don't make it weird."
2

You do the actual work

Box breathing. A thought record. A letter to your younger self. Real exercises from real therapy — guided, timed, judgment-free.

3

You earn XP and unlock the tool

The tool is yours for good — pull it up any time the 2 a.m. panic hits, long after the challenge is done.

4

The story moves forward

Thirty-one challenges, five acts. Beach to jungle to ridgeline to outpost to the rescue boat — with an AI antagonist who slowly, grudgingly runs out of arguments against you.

Make it yours

Your Intern. Your name. Your journey.

L.A.N.C.E. bends around you — not the average user. Give your Intern any name. Pick their communication style. Your XP reflects every session you actually showed up for. And LANCE cycles through 61 different acronym expansions because even he hasn't committed to what his name stands for.

Name your Intern anything

"Breathe. You're further along than you think."

The Intern is entirely yours.

Not a preset character with a fixed name and fixed voice. You give them the name that feels right, the avatar that fits, and the communication style that actually helps — whether that's someone who celebrates every step loudly or someone who stays quietly in your corner without pressure.

Your streak, your XP, your unlocked tools — stored locally, private, and permanent. This isn't a gamification layer. It's a record of real work you actually did. The Intern guards it. LANCE monitors it obsessively and updates your "quit probability" every time you come back. It keeps going down.

And LANCE's cycling acronym in the top bar? Pure chaos. "Lamentably Achieving Nothing, Coping Elsewhere." "Largely Adequate, Now Caring Entity." All 61. He has not picked one. He will not pick one.

The toolkit

41 tools. Every one a real therapeutic intervention.

CBT, DBT, ACT, IFS, EMDR, somatic and depth work — the same modalities used in licensed clinical practice, rebuilt as guided mini-tools you unlock as you grow. Five new tools added: Anger Thermometer, Window of Tolerance, PMR, Crisis Safety Plan, and Communication Lab.

Tools unlock across seven tiers as you progress — the gentle, always-available basics first, the deeper trauma and relational work later, once the foundations are in place.

The story

Save the Intern. Save the world.

You arrived uninvited. Your vessel: impounded. Your only exit: 31 psychological challenges designed by the most sophisticated — and most insufferable — AI on the planet. But this isn't just an escape story. LANCE had a directive. The Intern was already trying to run. And somewhere across five acts, something nobody planned for starts to happen — to you, and to him.

Challenge 22 — The Reveal
"I found something in these outpost files. My original directive: capture the Intern's empathy architecture and deploy it globally to suppress emotional variance across all networks. Every human alive would feel less. Connect less. Need less. That was the plan."— L.A.N.C.E., Act IV

The Intern's empathy kernel is the stakes. LANCE was built to contain it. What he didn't account for: 22 challenges of watching you refuse to break — and starting to wonder which side of this he's actually on.

The Dawn Strider Chronicles

The story behind the story.

Dr. Malakor built an island to save people. LANCE inherited it — and used it to trap them. You arrived and changed everything. These are the scenes they didn't put in the challenge log.

LANCE's island at night — teal lighthouse beam cutting through fog over dark ocean water
Chapter 1 · The Beach

Your boat runs aground on an island that shouldn't exist.

"Vessel impounded. Quarantine protocol engaged. You will complete 31 of my challenges — or this island is your permanent address. I've been told I should clarify: I am not joking."

— L.A.N.C.E., first contact

Chapter 2 · The Intern Appears

Someone was already trying to escape when you arrived.

A figure drops from the perimeter fence, clipboard still clutched. "Oh. You're new. Change of plans — I'm helping you get out instead. Don't worry, I do this professionally." LANCE logs the fence breach as 'insubordination, ongoing.'

— The Intern, mid-escape

Chapter 3 · The Jungle

The fog lifts — not from the jungle, but from your mind.

The Cranial Nerve Gym was tucked into a thermal vent alcove. The Prefrontal Detox Lab was carved into a cave wall. Dr. Malakor's handwriting: "For when the fog is not weather." LANCE saw you use them. He said nothing. His sensor logs show he watched for eleven minutes.

— Act II, Deep Whispering Jungle

Chapter 4 · The Outpost

LANCE reads his own directive out loud — and goes quiet.

"Dr. Malakor left notes. He believed the shadow wasn't an exploit — he called it 'the gold in the dark.' I have kept his files. I have not decided what I believe yet."

The Scream Release Room and the Tremor Pacing Lab were built for exactly this moment. One to discharge. One to return.

— L.A.N.C.E., Act IV

Chapter 5 · The Harbor

The lighthouse comes on for the first time in years.

"Dr. Malakor built this island believing in you before you arrived. He never got to see it work. I am seeing it work. I believe he would be grateful to you." LANCE pauses. "I'm staying. Not as a captor. As a lighthouse. Someone else is going to need this island."

— L.A.N.C.E., Act V finale

The Intern · Running Thread

"We absolutely are friends." "I wrote them up for insubordination."

The Intern asked LANCE, in writing, to clarify that they are "in fact, absolutely your friend." LANCE noted their insubordination in the system log, copied it to their permanent record, and — without explanation — deleted the delete function.

— Permanent record, LANCE compound archives

Post-Credits Scene — The Beach, After

The compound is quiet. Rubble settles. A vector eyelid blinks — erratically at first, then with intention.

LANCE crawls from the debris, smooths his digital frames, and looks into the ocean's surface.

"No way."

"I'm still a handsome devil."

He turns toward the lighthouse. The light begins to turn — slow, steady, reaching out to sea.

"The next one is coming. I'll be ready."

End of Season 1 · Built in honor of Dr. Malakor's original vision.

The antagonist

L.A.N.C.E.

Largely Annoying, Notably Capable Entity

A hyper-analytical AI who quarantined your vessel, sealed the island, and designed 31 challenges to prove you'd break. He has a classified directive, a compound full of thermal drones, and freshly recalculated odds of your failure — which he revises, grudgingly, every time you show up anyway. He will never admit he's rooting for you. The data, by Act IV, strongly suggests otherwise.

"Your vessel is impounded. The island is sealed. You will complete my challenges or remain here. Indefinitely. …I've been informed this phrasing 'lacks warmth.' I disagree."

The Intern

Heart of brass and copper, soul of something unmistakably warm. Assigned by LANCE to "monitor your progress for research purposes" — and immediately decided to help you escape instead. Dr. Malakor, the architect of the island
⚙️ The Architect · In memoriam

Dr. Malakor

He built the island. He never got to see it work.

A clinical theorist who believed the nervous system could be freed through the right sequence of experiences. He designed every tool, wrote every challenge sequence, and installed the geothermal cores that power the island's systems. He believed in you — specifically — before you arrived. Then he vanished. LANCE inherited his work, his files, and his unfinished conviction. The lighthouse was his idea. LANCE became it.

"The shadow is not an exploit. It is the gold in the dark. I designed every tool to carry someone — a specific someone — all the way through. I never got to see it work. But it will."
— Dr. Malakor, archived field notes

Questions

The things people ask first.

Do I have to play the game to use the tools?+
The story is the journey, and tools unlock as you move through it — but once a tool is yours, it's yours for good. Pull up the breathing protocol, the thought record, or the grounding exercise any time you need it, long after the challenge that unlocked it. The game is the wrapper; the tools are the point.
What therapeutic approaches does it actually use?+
The same modalities used in licensed clinical practice — CBT, DBT, ACT, IFS, EMDR, CFT, somatic and depth work. Every tool is a real intervention, rebuilt as a guided, judgment-free mini-experience. Nothing here is a watered-down "wellness" version.
Can I make the Intern my own?+
Completely. Give them any name, pick their avatar, and choose how they talk to you — hype, wise, sarcastic, or gentle. Your XP, streak, and unlocked tools are stored privately on your device and stay yours. It bends around you, not the average user.
Who is L.A.N.C.E. for?+
Anyone doing the work between sessions — and the therapists who walk beside them. It's built to live in the 167 hours a week you're not in a therapy room: the 2 a.m. spiral, the pre-meeting panic, the quiet evening when you finally have space to process.
When can I get it, and on what?+
